Bees and Brushes

Do you ever find yourself searching for a product, but aren’t sure where to begin!?  Look no further…every year, Allure magazine (www.allure.com) releases their “Best of Beauty” list.  The list includes the top rated beauty products, from anti-aging skin creams, to concealers, to mascara (where hands down, Maybelline’s Great Lash mascara wins almost EVERY year!  Love that little pink & green gem).  I recently found myself checking out the 2010 list for help with my thirsty hair (still traumatized from the incident).  Hoping to find a miracle, I downloaded the handy iPhone app looking for some type of hair conditioner/reconstructor that would bring my hair back to life.  What I found, under the “Mask - African American Hair” category, was Bumble & Bumble’s Mending Masque.  And although I’m not African-American, the way they described this product, I knew it was going to be good for MY hair type.  Fortunately, this was confirmed by my personal hair stylist (Carley from Matthew Michaels Salon www.matthewmichaels.com) and for a pricey $36 a tube, I splurged.  I also added its counterpart, B&B’s Mending Complex, a leave-in conditioner to put in before styling (which smells AMAZING, I must add).  I used the masque the other night for the first time.  After shampooing, you leave it in for 10 minutes, then rinse it out.  I was truly impressed. It’s one of those products where you DEFINITELY feel the difference immediately, which I like.

On to one more product which wasn’t on Allure's list, but was another recommendation from Carley.  The Mason Pearson hairbrush (www.masonpearson.com).  Due to the “hair rehab” I’m currently in, together, Carley and I have decided to take a break from my flat iron (yes, we’re on a break!).  In substitution, she advised me to use a good cushion brush with a mixture of boar & nylon bristles, which would straighten well with a blow dryer, but also keep my hair strong and healthy.  She introduced me to the Mason Pearson hairbrush, as well as the outrageous price tag ($90-$150) that comes with it.  FOR A BRUSH???  But, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I’ve made SEVERAL outrageous purchases for things I’ve worn or used only once, so to invest this much in a hairbrush that’s been around and had rave reviews since 1885, that I’ll likely have for at least twenty years (based on ALL 5-star reviews I read on several sites)…not such a bad idea after all!  After seeing how well my blow-out turned out with this brush, I began my online shopping to find the best price.  Alas, for $98.95 + FREE shipping my brush was ordered!  In two days, I received my brush.  I had a feeling this brush was going to change my life, but I really didn't think I could love it this much!  I almost NEVER brush my hair and I find myself in the car looking like Marcia Brady, brushing my hair while counting 51...52...53...  And, for those of you who have witnessed me blow dry my hair before, you can see why this is probably the most important part of my beauty regimen.  If only Mamma Jean were alive to see what progress I’ve made in my hair drying skills (R.I.P. Mamma Jean).
"The" brush of all brushes!
Fresh blow-out with the MP brush!

  1. I love your witty reviews.... and by the way, the Keratin treatment did the same to my locks... it's just now starting to rebound. I'll have to pick up some of that B&B stuff and even considering the brush investment. It's the same price as a flat iron without the heat ;)

  2. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend the B&B products! And the brush for that matter! Still looking for a good everyday shampoo & conditioner with a less hefty price ;)

  4. After my own "hair incident" this summer, I used B&b deeep and it worked great. And I think it was only like $12 bucks.
